Still Lifes
The still lifes that I do are generally an
exercise in eye / hand coordination, often leading to experimentation in
color and contrast. Although I have done large, complex still
lifes in the past, now I focus on close up studies and unusual angles,
shadows and reflections. I generally reserve painting them until
the quiet, winter months when I can't get outside as much. The
objects you see are just ordinary things found around my house and
flowers from my garden. I never use black or payne's grey, but
always obtain the darker tones with mixtures of pure color, much like
the Impressionists. I believe that this keeps the paintings fresher and more vibrant.
